Pronation... The root of all evil?

Pronation... The root of all evil?

Common causes of foot problems include trauma, heredity, overuse, bad shoes, diabetes, and being overweight.

But there is also a lesser-known cause that is at the root of many foot issues: pronation.

Pronation is a buzzword in the foot and ankle world. It essentially means that your foot rolls inward at the arch area. A certain amount of pronation of the foot is normal and helps the foot adapt to the ground and absorb shock.

People who have flat feet or flatter arches are most prone to pronating too much. But even someone with higher arches can be an excessive pronator.

Excessive pronation can lead to many conditions such as plantar fasciitis, bunions, tendinitis and arthritis, just to name a few.

Children can start to develop foot problems because of pronation as well. But if excessive pronation is controlled in childhood, hereditary conditions like bunions and hammertoes can be prevented.

Pronation can also lead to pain in the knees, hips or back.

We have been able to relieve pain in these areas by eliminating pronation.

It’s easy for us to determine whether pronation is a concern for your feet. We do so by thoroughly examining them, doing an X-ray evaluation, and checking the wear pattern of your shoes.

The number one thing we do to eliminate pronation is to make Custom Orthotics. Orthotics prevent your feet from making movements they aren’t supposed to. They can also help reduce pain of the feet, ankles, knees, hips and back.

When your feet get the support they need to move like they were meant to, foot problems like pronation can resolve themselves.

If you have been experiencing pain anywhere from your feet to your back, feel free to schedule an appointment with us to evaluate your feet for excessive pronation. We are here to help your feet function optimally.
