Perfect Baby Feet!
The feet of most babies are perfect.
The skin is smooth, the toes are straight and the nails are clear.
Throughout adolescence and early adulthood, most people keep the happy feet they were born with. But feet often begin to change when people reach their thirties and beyond.
One of the more common changes is that the beautifully straight toes from birth can start to curl or bend sideways. Knuckles may become more prominent. They can even get so bad that the toes cross over one another.
Toes are meant to be straight like they are when we’re born.
But toes that curl or bend are NOT caused by behavior, like wearing bad shoes or being too active.
The number one cause of this condition is genetics. If a parent or grandparent has or had noticeably curled toes, it’s likely to affect one or more of the next generation.
Generally speaking, genetic predispositions cause repetitive abnormal movements in the foot that eventually lead to bending toes. For example, people who have flatter arches are more prone to this than any other foot type.
If the curling or bending is ignored, the toes can become a real problem into our fifties and beyond. The curled toes can become rigid, leading to corns or sores either on top of the knuckle or at the tip of the toe. Some toes can even become deformed to the point of needing surgery to straighten them.
We’ve seen some serious problems from toes like this. Infection and even amputation of a portion or the entire toe has been needed. People who have diabetes are even more afflicted by these complications.
Unfortunately, there aren’t splints or shoes that can prevent the toes from getting worse.
But there’s good news! Addressing the curling toes as early as possible can help avoid the onset of pain and the need for surgery.
More often than not, Custom Foot Orthotics can eliminate the abnormal movements of the feet, helping to avoid further curling of the toes.
If you see this problem developing, we know you would prefer avoiding surgery or more severe complications. Although we can’t make your feet as perfect as they were when you were a baby, we can keep you walking easily and comfortably.
