Whether it appears suddenly or has been present for a while, it could be the sign of something serious.
Unless an injury occurred, most swelling doesn’t hurt.
Don’t let that fool you.
Some of the most common reasons for swelling of the ankles and feet are:
- Veins not functioning properly
- Arthritis
- Heart disease
- High blood pressure
- Kidneys malfunctioning
- An injury
Swelling in one extremity is often from an injury or unusual pressure on that part.
The sudden onset of swelling in one foot or ankle without an injury is usually either Gout or a Stress Fracture.
These would both cause pain, unlike other forms of swelling.
When swelling is in both extremities, the cause is usually related to a circulation problem, the heart, the kidneys, or medication.
Sometimes we can make a diagnosis based on fact-finding, an exam, and x-ray.
If we think the cause is poorly functioning veins, we’ll recommend seeing a circulation specialist.
In any case, getting to the root of the problem and finding a fast solution is critical to avoid serious complications.
Elevating your legs and wearing over-the-counter compression socks are the two best home remedies.
If that doesn’t help after a couple of weeks, having us take a look would be in your best interest.
Swelling in your lower extremities is just too important to ignore.
